Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faces tough questions at NATO Summit
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faced tough questions from German and French leaders about some people held in custody in Turkey. After a failed coup, Erdogan has tightened his grip over Turkish leadership and many people are facing lawsuits. The relationship between Turkey and major allies in European Union has been facing stress in the recent months.
French photojournalist Mathias Depardon is still in custody in Turkey. French President Emmanuel Macron raised the issue with Erdogan at NATO Summit. Depardon is on hunger strike marking a protest against taking him in custody. He was working on an assignment from National Geographic magazine and was taken into custody on May 8.
Many journalists are facing jail term in Turkey. Many of them are involved in lawsuits alleging anti-national activities. German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yucel has also been detained in Turkey.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel raised the issue of Deniz Yucel’s detention with Erdogan.
As per Associated Press report, “Erdogan also met with European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, even though it was stressed that the encounter in no way meant that relations had returned to business as usual.”
