Two Austrian companies under investigation in connection with VW scandal
Austrian authorities have confirmed that a couple of companies and their bosses are under probe in connection with suspected serious fraud, financial crimes and environmental offences related to the Volkswagen emissions scandal.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the WKStA prosecutors’ office said that probes had been ongoing for the last many months and would likely continue for years.
However, the spokesperson declined to name the companies or the bosses involved in the ongoing investigation.
European anti-fraud office OLAF has already sent its judicial recommendations to German prosecutors about its probe into whether the Volkswagen used EU funds and European Investment Bank (EIB) loans to build devices that cheated emission tests.
VW suffered its biggest business crisis in its eight-decade-old history when the aforementioned cheating scandal came to light in September 2015. The scandal has already cost the carmaker more than $25 billion in fines, car recalls and compensation.
